Praia, 26 January 2026 – The ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) held a bilateral meeting in Praia, aimed at reinforcing their strategic partnership in support of sustainable energy development in West Africa.

The meeting provided an opportunity to review progress on ongoing AECID-funded initiatives and discuss future areas of collaboration, with a particular focus on the Water–Energy–Food (WEF) Nexus, renewable energy deployment, and institutional coordination. Both institutions emphasized the need of aligning cooperation frameworks with ECOWAS regional priorities on energy, water, food systems, and climate action to maximize development impact.

In his address, the Acting Executive Director of ECREEE, Mr. Gibson Obasi, underscored the importance of AECID’s continued support, emphasizing that strong and sustained partnerships are critical to effectively translating regional energy policies into tangible results on the ground.

Mr. Santiago Ormeño, General Coordinator of AECID for ECOWAS and Nigeria, reiterated AECID’s commitment to supporting ECOWAS-led energy initiatives, emphasizing the shared vision of both institutions to advance inclusive and sustainable solutions that strengthen energy, water, and food systems across the region.

The meeting reaffirmed the strong partnership between ECREEE and AECID, highlighting shared achievements under ongoing initiatives and a common commitment to deepen future collaboration, in alignment with ECOWAS priorities to advance sustainable and inclusive development across the region.
